Today, like most days, I got to thinking about Frankenstein’s monster. Specifically, I began to consider the differences between Mary Shelley’s description of the monster and the Boris Karloff version that has been burned into the retinas of popular culture. Don’t get me wrong, I do love Karloff’s unique hairdo, prominent brow, and spiffy dinner jacket. However, it is a departure from Shelley’s description. With the tools closest to me (black and red Sharpie markers and a highlighter) I doodled what I imagined the monster to look like as described in the book.
Not too shabby. Though it would appear that while drawing it I may have been channeling Gary Busey’s teeth. I can’t be certain, but it is doubtful that Mary Shelley had Gary Busey in mind while creating her monster.
