Now, I’ve never met a zombie in the traditional sense, but I do know some old folks and they rarely seem up for a party. Using that logic, how much partying could a zombie do? Hence the glum-looking fella with the balloon. I didn’t submit him to the Advocate, but I’m pretty fond of him nonetheless. It’s likely that you’ll see a colored-in fancy-pants version of Party Zombie in a post to come.
Setting my goofy sketch aside, I exchanged a few ideas with the folks at the Advocate. I recall the requests being that it should feel like fall in New England and that the zombies not be “dripping and gross” and I got to work. For the latter, I had to fire up the old gross-o-meter and exercise a bit of self-control. Here’s what ended up running on the cover:
For this illustration, I drew some inspiration from the 70’s paintings of the sickly looking kids with huge eyes by Margaret Keane. I think the end result is pleasant and warm, in a George A. Romero writes for Little Golden Books sort of way.
